Great Homemade Dog Toys
All dogs love their toys but they won’t understand that you may have paid a lot of money for something before they decide they don’t like. As a general rule, the toys that cost the least will usually be the one that dogs love the most. After all, many dogs have a tennis ball they love. Bearing this in mind, this guide gives some ideas for great homemade toys for dogs and puppies.
Homemade Rope Chew
This is one of the easiest dog toys to make and is pretty self explanatory. Just tie a knot at each end of a fairly thick length of rope and you have a toy. Dogs often love retrieving as much as they love chewing so this toy is perfect for both. Try to use clean rope for the toy. Nylon rope can easily fray at the ends so it’s best to melt it before giving it to the dog.
Tennis Ball & Rope
A toy like this one is a variation on the tennis ball and allows you to throw it much further than a regular ball. Simply take a tennis ball and put a hole on either side to thread a rope through. An ideal length of rope is about 6ft. As a general rule, dogs like chasing things so this toy is great. Remember to melt the two ends of the rope after tying them together.
Old Dog Bones
It’s very easy to make an old dog bone interesting again to dogs and puppies after they’ve got bored of it. Although hollow dog bones work best, any can be used. Simply put some peanut butter and and around the done and allow the dog to lick it off. This can make an old bone much more inviting and dogs may spend hours trying to get the last bit out. Obviously, the more challenging it is the better.
Things Not To Use
Remember not to use things for dog toys that could be chewed apart and potentially swallowed by the dog. Of course, make sure there is nothing toxic in any toys such as glue. Don’t be tempted to give a dog an old shoe as a chew toy because it may just teach them that it is OK to chew on shoes.
