The American Foxhound is a very old breed – older than America, the country it was named after. This breed originated from the English dogs that were brought to the New World in 1650 by Robert Brooke.
In its country of origin, these dogs were acclaimed for being excellent hunters. The dogs were used by the British landed gentry to hunt foxes. Hunted in packs, the dogs will chase the prey while the hunters follow on horseback. A change in the deep melodious voice of the dog signifies that a prey is found. Settlers of the New World utilize these dogs to hunt foxes as well. However, because of the ferocious tenacious nature, it was rumored that the dogs were utilized by the English military commanders to track and hunt Indians.
The English Foxhounds were crossed and re-crossed with the dogs of settlers from Ireland and France until a new breed that has adapted to the conditions of the new country has evolved. A new breed, the American Foxhound was developed.
An American Foxhound is basically a hunting dog. These dogs would be happiest if they are hunting. An ultra sensitive scenting ability, a remarkable staying power and a passionate desire to overpower a prey make this breed a notable hunter. An American Foxhound that has found an interesting scent will not let anything or anybody to stand in its way to bag the prey. Foxes are the usual quarry of American Foxhounds but these dogs hunts other animals too. That the dog will be highly valued by hunter is a given fact.
American Foxhounds are highly valued for their excellent hunting abilities. However, apart from the hunting prowess, these dogs are valued as well for their loving and gentle nature. These energetic dogs turn into placid pets with gentle disposition at home. This breed is not a one man dog. These hunting dogs form a strong bond with the family but these dogs are noted to bond closely with the children.
