How to teach a dog to fetch
Are you aware that getting the attention of the sexy ladies on the beach would be a breeze if you have a dog that would play up and deftly catch the Frisbee every time you give the fetch command? It would certainly be lots of fun to play with a dog that can fetch. To be able to have these fun moments, dogs need to be trained to fetch. Retrievers are renowned for being an outstanding breed used by hunters to get the game after the shot but these dogs would still have to be trained to fetch.
The fetch command is one of the basic obedience lessons that can be learned easily by the dog. Dogs are playful animals thus it would not be difficult to get them interested to the training at it will be viewed by the dog as another game. To train the dog to fetch, an owner can take advantage of the dog’s inherent behavior of pleasing its people. Treats can be used to make the dog interested in the training as dogs are noted to be food motivated.
Before you start the training, play with the dog first. Get the dog’s attention by playing with the toy that will be used in the training. Play with the ball, toss and then retrieve. Because dogs are very playful, they will try to get the ball before you can. Toss the ball again and give the “Fetch” command and let the dog go after the ball this time. The dog will run after the ball, touch the ball with its mouth but don’t expect the dog to return the ball to you. Praise the dog and toss the ball again. Keep on training the dog until it has learned to obey the fetch command. Every time the dog obeys praise and reward the pet with a treat.
The reward will entice the dog to obey as it will be associated by the dog to the fetch command. To test the dog, give the fetch command and toss the ball farther. The dog will go a little further but may not pick up the ball. Do not give a treat. The dog must understand that a reward is forthcoming only if the ball is fetched.
A treat filled toy can be used to train a dog to fetch. Just make sure that the dog cannot get the treat inside the toy. The purpose of using a baited toy will be lost if the dog can remove and eat the treat. The dog has to learn to return the baited toy to you so that you can remove the treat and give it to the dog.
