There seems to be more and more dog food allergies these days just as with humans where allergies also have increased the last 20 to 30 years. The environment seems to be playing a big role in most common allergies. But with dog food allergies the ingredients are the cause of the allergies. Is hypoallergenic dog food a solution to this problem?

With a food allergy your dogs immune system is the problem, it is over reacting to some of the ingredients in the dog food. most of the time it is just one particular protein that is causing the problem. It depends on the type of the food allergy what the symptoms are, some dogs get diarrhea others start scratching until they have raw bold spots.

But back to our question “Is Hypoallergenic Dog Food A Solution for Allergies?” This is not so easy to answer it depends on the type of allergy and on the way the hypoallergenic dog food is created.

Sometimes hypoallergenic dog food can do wonders and especially the modern hypoallergenic dog foods which are creates by altering the proteins that often cause the allergies. Hypoallergenic dog food that is made this way contains proteins that are not detected by the dogs immune system.

The older ideas about hypoallergenic dog food are more about giving your dog meat from other animals like duck or lamb. And this approach has not proved to be successful in the long run. Before you start with any hypoallergenic dog food you should ask your vet for advice.
